Well, well, well

Not all the way, but so much better. Oh I'm sorry, "Well" is how I'm feeling after ONE WEEK in bed with the nasty flu. The evening after my post last week, all plans of going "BIG" for our celebration of 50 went down the toilet along with alot of other things that literally made their way to the same destination. I know, gross right?

My apologies to S@HM Jaz! I had my club picked out and the 80's slow dance song! Too bad;( However, between the other ideas ALL 6 of them...Wahoo for our six followers OK OK actually 4...only 4 eligible comments!!! Oh wait I thought we were celebrating 50? Funny. I have decided that a GIFT CARD is in order...

A gift card to a totally practical place, a place we like to call TARGET!

And the WINNER of THE GIFT CARD FROM TARGET IS........................

well first let me share how the winner was determined

1. i found a pen in my purse and a mcdonalds receipt
2. i numbered 1-4 on the back of the mcdonald receipt
3. 4 not 6 because two comments were ineligible
4. i put the papers in a box
5. Belle did the honor of picking one out

Comment #4 WINS..That would be LEIA!!

Leia please contact me with your address via fb or email. CONGRATS!!!

Give Me the Caaasshhhh!

Who wouldn't like an extra hundred or two every month...and if you don't, then you need to re-evaluate!

Here are some ideas on how to SAVE some MONEY:

Buy Used - So much money is spent on new clothes, shoes and toys (especially when kids are involved). A great way to save around 25% per year is to head out to the consignment shops or auctions. I personally love the Salvation Army and Goodwill. I find great things from clothes to toys to furniture and even craft  supplies (wreaths, ribbon, fabric/lace, etc.). Not only can you get a great deal but you can even shop on days when they have sales and save even more money (REMEMBER: there are tons of people just like you who have gotten rid of good stuff...not everything is really old and trashy).

Cut Down on Travel - Just as simple as driving around less. We all have seen the gas prices and lets face it they are not getting any lower! So, take that into consideration when you plan your week. Try not to go across town (or into town) more than you must. Even when you do need to travel try to use public transportation (it is not just for poor people), ride a bike (once the temperature rises), or even walk. Maybe this means that you can't take your kids to every thing every day. Work out a schedule that works for your family.

Trim Off Household Expenses - Start with all the extras like cable (come on, I know that most TV shows can be watched online...believe me because that is how I watch them). Most of us have become so addicted to our TVs that we spend less and less time with our families. Even when we go on a date or have Family Time and watch a movie...I mean come on, REALLY? that is spending time with someone?!?!? Another place to look for making cut backs would be cell phones. Regular contract plans can cost twice as much as the pay as you go plans. My husband purchased a new phone with a year activation plan and 800 minutes for $150. Now, since he is not a big talker/texter/Internet surfer those 800 minutes will probably last him about 12 months. That decision alone will be saving us $330 per year! Now that is a nice chunk of change.

Make Time for Family Time - Instead of just having a scheduled 1 hour once a week plan to spend more time together as a family at home. Tons of money is shelled out every month by families on movie theaters, restaurants and expensive get-aways (like amusement parks). Now, there is a time to do all of these things but if you make these types of outings more rare then they become more of a treat and more special. Plus you get to save lots of money and get to spend more time at home heightening your relationship and gaining knowledge in homemaking skills (like how to make that awesome egg drop soup).

Keep Track of Your Loose Change - I have been able to do a weeks worth of laundry at the laundromat with change I have saved from my husbands pants pockets! Get an old peanut butter jar and make it look all cute if you want and stash the loose change in there till it is full. It is a great way to put away a few bucks for a simple emergency (like dying for a coke) or even a way to save up to take the family out to McD's.

Double Check the Deals - Whether you are checking out the grocery adds and price matching at
Wal-Mart or trying to save a few bucks for a date with your sweety, make sure you check around and find out what your options are. One thing I found is that there are a few restaurants that do a Dinner and a Movie deal (you get two entrees and two movie tickets for about $30...this saves us about $15 on our dates).

These are a few of my ideas....

Cute Valentine Project

Okay I am not much of a Valentine decorator but this was too cute to pass up. I found this over at http://eighteen25.blogspot.com/2011/01/heart-wreaths.html which they got the idea from http://www.theidearoom.net/2010/01/felt-heart-wreath.html So cute. Here are some of the things I made with this idea. I got the free printable subway art below and this site. http://eighteen25.blogspot.com/2011/01/valentine-subway-art.html

You will need a foam form or ball, pins, felt circles.

My Mom has a machine to cut them so that was so nice not to have to cute them all out. Then take your circles and fold them in half and then in half again. Then take a straight pin and stick through the end and into your form. I made like a flower with 4 of them and just did this all over the form.

Then fluff it up.

refiner's fire

people often ask me how i do it--all the tasks of motherhood times 5...my usual answer is "one day at a time!"...and i know that no matter how many babies are yours, you do it the same way!

we moms know that ours is a mostly thankless job...but we also know that the 90% of stress and mess is somehow completely and totally worth the 10% of sweetness our children pay us with...when they want to. :)

a beautiful piece of pottery could be easily chipped and broken if not for the blazing fire of the kiln that strengthens and refines it. and we mothers the world over feel chipped and broken on a daily basis, yet it is those very trials that strengthen and refine us. don't we feel so successful when we learn to accept those stumbling blocks as stepping stones?! those fires make us more patient, less judgmental, more tolerant, less critical, more able to multitask, less worried about the details, less structured, more organized, and...sometimes...perfectly fine with being less organized.

when we moms are in the fire, it is usually hard to recognize and value what we are learning. but day by day, all through the problem solving, crisis resolution, mess clean-ups, sleep deprivation, and loving more than we ever thought possible...we are turning into smart, aware, beautifully refined women.

"no pain that we suffer, no trial that we experience is wasted. it ministers to our education, to the development of such qualities as patience, faith, fortitude and humility. all that we suffer and all that we endure, especially when we endure it patiently, builds up our character, purified our hearts, expands our souls, and makes us more tender and charitable, more worthy to be called the children of God...and it is through sorrow and suffering, toil and tribulation that we gain the education that we came here to acquire."

...orson f. whitney

so forge on, moms! and remember that as we are experiencing the everyday trials of motherhood, those fires are making us shine!!

even 3 year-olds have "refiner's fire" days...

Oh Lucy.

In our family...we call these my "Lucy" moments:

Clogged sink due to me being totally oblivious to the fact that I didn't put a strainer in the sink prior to trying to drain the water off of the noodles. I just dumped the whole pot in the sink and then turned around like it was normal, looked at the stove and then back at the sink and...*sigh*

I immediately thought "It's Tuesday, Mcdonalds happy meal night. I should just go get happy meals." However, my determination to make the BEST mac and cheese this side of Rogersville pushed through. I envisioned my boys being married and telling their wives that their Mom, makes the most Delicious mac and cheese! I could hear Belle calling me one day and asking "Mom, can I have your recipe? I just love that stuff!"

So I did what any other INSANE mother would do...I filled my pot back up, started fresh, excited that I could still pull it off.  AND low and behold my Velveeta cheese that was in the pantry...expired 6 MONTHS AGO! *SIGH* "OK" I thought, "I will just use up the cheese in the fridge. I have tons." I whipped it all up, put it in the oven and was so certain, so certain that my creation THREE cheese mac and cheese was gonna be a hit! I mean like Panera mac and cheese kind of "hit"!

No one liked it, and I believe I even heard "gross" come out of the mouths of those babes. We threw it in the trash. I then gave them a lecture on the starving children in Africa.

The only thing that came out of that dinner night was a good laugh for Matt and some clogged pipes!

...fast AND easy...

That's what she said!

Okay, okay...I've received one of the greatest Christmas gifts of all time!
~Fast Easy Bread~

It is:
- fast
- easy
- delish
- addictive
- yummy

Now, when I say this is easy...I mean EASY!!!  I make at least 2 batches a day!  That's about 4 loaves of bread...but I don't just make bread...

I make Monkey Bread, Calzones, Peanut Butter and Jelly, Cinnamon Rolls, and Dinner Rolls...

I. Am. Not. A. Baker.
AT!  ALL!

*but this stuff makes me feel like a PRO and makes me feel like I'm actually productive in the kitchen!*

I'm the kind of SAHM that HAS GOT TO STICK TO A SCHEDULE or my entire day is messed up and I feel terrible!  This does NOT interrupt my schedule at all!  It actually helps me out!!

So, since I'm in love with this stuff...I'm gonna tell you a little bit about it!

You can make homemade bread from start to finish in less than 60 minutes!
It was brought to us by a SAHM!  We gotta give her props! =)
It doesn't cost an arm and a leg!
Each bundle makes 44 bread loaves or 44 pizza and the dough only costs you $0.79 even after buying the bread flour, salt and sugar!
Less than a dollar!  How do we beat that price?!

I know you're iching to see where you can get this!!!

Fast Easy Bread  <- That's the website you can order from!
Fast Easy Recipes  <- That's the blog where you can get lots of recipes from!

I hope each of you decide to get this...it's divine!!!
**you'll thank me for it later!**

Getting "in the mood"...

to be domestic is sometimes a challenge for me. It's not one of my natural talents, in fact I'm still trying to discover those "natural" talents I'm supposed to have! However, that doesn't mean I keep a dirty home or never make family dinners. It just simply means...I have a hard time finding EXCITEMENT in it all. I mean does anyone, really? The dusting, laundry, dishes, organizing, toilets, window washings, sweeping etc...yeah I pretty much would rather...um do anything else.  So when it comes to this area of motherhood, you know the responsible "keep things tidy" part...I am ALWAYS looking for a little motivation! This week I found that motivation in the power of THE APRON!!! I know it sounds funny, but YOU should try it! Put an apron on and just see...it's like a magic hat or something!

I felt like this lady AND you WILL too! Isn't she gorgeous?!

June Cleaver

Sunny Martin

I mean we are pretty much the same. Don't you think? Ladies, put your aprons on and get to work! Go ahead and pretend YOU are June Cleaver!

the Holidays are over...What Now?

With all the many things that have to get done for the holiday season a Mom's plate is EXTRA full. But now that we have gotten beyond the hype and excitement of the end of the year holiday season...WHAT NOW?!

Well, here are a few ideas to help you have a little bit of fun getting back into the "swing" of things.

1. Go play at the park-even if it is a little cold you can survive the park for at least 15 min. giving your kids the chance to smell the fresh air, run around like crazy people and let loose some energy. (and you can feel the sun on your skin and get some much needed Vitamin D)

2. Take swimming lessons - I just took my son to his first swimming lesson at the local YWCA (I am sure they have them at other community centers) and he had a blast! It was nice to get out of the house and pretend that it is warm outside, as well as learning a life skill.

3. Local toy stores - my husband took our son out for a father/son activity and they went to a local toy store and played with all the toys. (this store "the Toy Store" actually had a play area for kids-see if you have a local store that offers that too, and NO you DON'T need to buy anything!)

4. Have a picnic at home - set up a tent in your living room or basement and pack a sack lunch. after you pile everyone into the tent you can tell stories and sing songs or even read a few books about the outdoors.

5. Library sweet Library - it is always a good time to start reading....or going to watch other kids (like my son does). There are always activities for kids of all ages at your local Library. Check it out!

6. Cooking Lessons - every kids loves to help out in the kitchen. Find a simple and yummy recipe that you can make together. Have your kid/s help out or sit up close so they can see what you are doing. You can even pretend you are on your own cooking show. (take it up a notch and actually video tape your "show" and post it on your blog or YouTube - kids love to see themselves online!!!)

7. Splurge on a kid place - even if you don't have much cash take the kid/s to a fun kid place like Chuck-E-Cheese or Discovery Zone or even McDonald's with a Play Place. You can just play or even just buy a snack and play. It is a super treat and they will remember it!

8. Marshmallow Fights - for this one you will need to have PVC pipes and mini marshmallows. You can make the "guns" and play around the house, in your friends house (if you don't want to pick up at your house), in your back yard or even at a church gym! click HERE for video instructions.

9. Go to the Movies - you can either find an inexpensive theater and take the kid/s (regardless of age...if you still have a little one just give it a try, for $2 or so who cares of they only last 45min.) or you can set up a SWEET movie at home. Make the movie food, turn out all the lights and have everyone snuggle up.

Well, I hope that gives you a few fresh ideas. I know I will be trying out many of them!

Is Cooking Crafty?

I think so!!! So here is a great recipe for you. These French Toast Roll-Ups are a hit whenever I serve them. They are super easy and I love that I can pull a few out of the freezer and pop them in the oven and it is a warm breakfast fast! Enjoy!!

French Toast Roll-Ups
1 8oz package cream chesse, softened
1 egg yolk
24 slices white sandwich bread
1 tablespoon ground cinnamon
1 cup sugar, divided
1 cube butter, melted

In a medium bowl, beat the cream cheese, egg yolk, and 1/4 cup sugar until smooth; set aside.
Cut the crust off each slice of brad then roll out each slice with a rolling pin. Spread the cheese mixture over the bread, distributing evenly. Roll up bread slice jelly roll syle. In a shallow dish, mix remaining 3/4 cup sugar and the cinnamon. In a separate dish melt the butter. Roll each roll-up in the butter and then in the sugar and cinnamon mixture. Cover and freeze for at least 2 hours. Place roll-ups seam side down on a baking sheet. Bake at 400 for 10-12 minutes or until golden brown. Roll-ups can be frozen up to 2 months. I like to serve with Buttermilk Syrup.

Buttermilk Syrup
1 1/2 cups sugar
1/2 cup butter or margarine
1 teaspoon baking soda
3/4 cup buttermilk
2 tablespoons corn syrup
2 teaspoons vanilla extract

In a sauce pan, combine the first five ingredients; bring to a boil. Boil for 7 minutes. Remove from the heat; stir in vanilla.

I realized something...New Year Resolutions are ALWAYS made up of either... Health (any kind...exercise, spiritual, mental, relationships.. etc..) or WEALTH (savings, paying debt off, planning..etc..)! Amazing!

Don't you find that to be fascinating too? We all want to be better and have another chance at something and a reason to start over. It's not every day EVERYONE around you is "ok" with putting the past YEAR behind you and wiping the slate clean! So exciting!

I can be a BETTER mommy this year! (health)

I won't shop as much and I will give myself more pedicures! (wealth)

I will drink lots and lots of water! ( health)

My husband will now be the bill payer...give him a stab at making the best of things! ( wealth)

I could go on and on of the the new person I want to be.... ( i like dots.... have you noticed?)...

 AND then...

I have a BIGGER thought and I talk to myself "well Sunny, you know that through the miracle of forgiveness and the atonement of Jesus Christ you can ALWAYS begin anew". I can always become better EVEN in the middle of JULY! What?! It's true.

Matt and my new motto is "do your best, and forget the rest" (we stole that from the p90x workouts;) but it works...the saying works for us! In ALL areas of our life, if we are doing our best, we CAN forget the rest, AND through the Lord, you will gain all that you need.

So in February when all the excitement of Christmas and the New Year have passed, and you have broken EVERY resolution you made...don't throw your arms in the air and walk away and wait for 2012!...Keep at it!
